Summary:
In early 2013, an endangered red wolf was shot and killed. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has issued a $2500 reward for information about this death. Red wolves are currently endangered, with less than 120 red wolves in the wild remaining. This has caused a terrible setback for the Red Wolf Recovery Program. Red wolves used to live throughout the southeastern US but were nearly hunted to extinction in order to protect farmers’ livestock. At the moment, all of the wolves live in northeastern North Carolina. At the moment, the species is placed under the Endangered Species Act, with a $100,000 fine if one kills a red wolf.
Reflection:
The red wolf surprisingly was one of the species that I did on my endangered species newsletter. It was hunted to near extinction and faced habitat destruction as well. I personally find it odd as to why they are called red wolves in the first place despite their lack of much red on them. Regardless, I feel that the person who shot the red wolf should be found immediately and be fined for it. Yet, at the same time, there could be better things done than search for this single person. As a result, this brings me to believe that it will be difficult for the $100,000 fine to be charged if one wolf were to be killed.
